Welcome to the Summer Camp Leadership blog. For those of us who lead summer camps, making a positive difference in the lives of young people is our passion. Turning that passion into a reality, however, takes more than the ability to lead songs, teach archery or plan craft projects. Creating camp experiences that truly transform lives takes leadership. Leadership that creates a vision for the future, leadership that inspires and engages others, leadership that remains focused and stays the course. My hope is through this blog you'll find ideas, inspiration and tools to help you be a great summer camp leader.

Leadership Tools: The Affinity Diagram

One of the tools I use regularly as a leader is the affinity diagram. It's a great technique to use when you're doing planning, particularly with a group of staff members. The affinity diagram combines the creative brainstorming process with bringing structure and organization to ideas. I've used it to plan staff training, prepare job descriptions and develop annual goals and objectives. A great description of the affinity diagram can be found at http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTMC_86.htm

Here's a brief description and example of an affinity diagram.
